Non Linear Narrative Cite Map

My nonlinear narrative will be about college life and how different decisions will affect a student. The user will start off by picking what aspect they want to focus on whether it be to have a social life in college or to focus in school.

Interactive Art

What is interactive art?

• Interactive art is a form of art that requires spectators to engage in the artwork in order to achieve its true purpose. Many interactive art installations today involve sensors which interact with the spectator and allows the installation to carry out its true purpose. 

History

• Interactive art got its start in the late 1960s and included works reactive to their kinetic environments. Theoretical works like Umberto Ecos aperta in 1962 which contributed to the interpretation on the role played by the spectator.  

Examples

• Barbican Rain Room
• This is an installation of a rain room that uses sensors in order to detect figures underneath, preventing the figures from getting wet. This is a form of interactive art because the true purpose of the installation cannot be obtained without human or user interaction.
• Pace Gallery Crystal Universe
• This is an installation of strings of led lights in which the user can go on their website and pick which setting they want to be displayed next.
• There is also another piece that was displayed at Pace Gallery that featured 2 panels of flowers. Depending on how close or far of proximity you are from the panel, the flowers will bloom or die in the shape of the figure in front of it.

Relevance to Art 74?

• Interactive art is using new digital media such as sensors along with other new technologies which are nontraditional in order to create wonderful art installations.

Six Concepts for Play project

Music Box: This music box will incorporate intricate designs on each panel. It will have a hand crank which is programmed to play a certain song.

 

Rocking horse: This wooden rocking horse will be a miniature model due to the limiting bed size of the laser cutter.

Yo-Yo: This Yo-Yo will be made more geometric than traditional ones which will have multiple circle pieces stacked and glued together.

Connect Four: Acrylic pieces will be cut and slot together in order to recreate the game. Circle pieces will be cut out to make the playing pieces that will be used to attempt to connect four consecutive pieces.

Sliding Puzzle: A sliding puzzle will be made out of wood in which each piece will be arranged together to in a certain way to make out the image. The frame will be layered and the pieces will have grooves that will make it possible for the pieces to slide without falling out of the frame.

Night Light: This night light will be made of wood and have intricate designs cut out in order to cast beautiful shadows. Multiple holes will be cut out in order to represent the stars and a peaceful setting for a place of dreamland.

How would you define the role of Digital Media in society?

Digital media is becoming more and more prevalent in today's society. It is fast and easily accessible to virtually anyone that has access to the technology. Instead of getting news from a traditional newspaper, within an instant, we can have the same information readily available with the touch of a button. Digital media has an expectation to deliver information to the public at a rapid rate and reach wider scope of people compared to traditional methods. 

What is the most valuable piece of digital technology you own?



The most valuable piece of digital technology that I own right now is my laptop. I have access to the internet that is also pretty mobile. I can use my laptop at home or bring it to class to work on assignments. It also has the Adobe Creative Cloud on it which is very valuable since it does cost a lot of money if you are not a student using it for educational purposes. It also has important files on it as well as a lot of my personal pictures I've taken about 5 years ago up until now.

What is your greatest frustration with living in a digital world? 

My greatest frustration with living in a digital world is that there is new technology coming out every year or couple of years. A good example of this would be Apple's iPhone line. One might think that they have the latest technology and they are set for a couple years, but then the new iPhone comes out and suddenly your phone that was new a year ago is now outdated. I also get frustrated with the consumer's desire to constantly have the newest best thing. Someone might have year old iPhone 5 but the iPhone 6 comes out and they are suddenly unsatisfied with the phone they have that is still fully functioning.
